Drama
(Ticket includes feature film & short film)
Synopsis:
Anna finds herself on the street after being evicted from her apartment. At the same time, she learns that her son, Jason, whom she had to abandon 20 years ago, wants to reconnect with her. He arranged to meet her in a small café in Moncton, but she didn't have the strength to hold his gaze and answer all his questions. She then takes refuge, clandestinely, in the basement of the opulent house of an elderly couple. A dramatic event will turn everything upside down and force Anna to forge a bond with Victorine, the owner of the place. The strange friendship of the two women will help them face their own demons.
Audience review: "Laurie Gagné is extraordinary in the role of a young woman in difficulty. You feel her distress so much. And Louise Turcot plays with great aplomb. I went to the premiere doubtful and came out absolutely delighted. Well done! A must see."
Opinion of a member of the CINERGIE selection committee: "I really liked this film. Very touching. This is the story of a former drug addict who finds herself homeless because she can't pay for her room, who reconnects with her biological son through his initiative. She finds refuge in the basement of a couple's house... A great story with a happy ending for her. There's a lot of humanity in this film."

Biographical, Historical Drama
(Ticket includes feature film & short film)
Synopsis:
Based on the Governor General's Award-winning novel by Kim Thúy, Ru is the story of the arduous journey of a wealthy family fleeing from Vietnam in 1975, landing in Quebec. After a dangerous sea crossing and a stay in a refugee camp in Malaysia, young Vietnamese girl Tinh and her family are accepted as refugees in Canada and arrive in Granby where they begin their new lives. But for Tinh, adapting comes with its own set of challenges. Already shy and reserved by nature, she has to learn a new language and integrate into her new environment. Haunted by the hardships of the journey, Tinh will have to dig deep within herself for the resilience necessary for her survival and happiness.
Audience review: "Unbelievable and moving. Get out your tissues! The film was touching and beautiful. I recommend it to everyone."
Press review: "By focusing his camera on the gaze and discreet gestures of his main actors, the director offers a framework, an echo chamber where the many emotions — often contradictory and complex — that inhabit his characters resonate. And that's what makes this work so powerful. Through the silences and the unspoken, Ru sheds light on the relief and gratitude that Tinh feels, but also the anger and grief she feels after being brutally uprooted from her country and culture. [...] Ru, which means "to rock" in Vietnamese, arrives in the cultural landscape like a long embrace that comforts us. And this, despite difficult scenes marked by war." - Léa Harvey, Le Soleil (4 stars)
